Special precautions need to be taken by anyone needing to disturb any asbestos.  

There are strict regulations in place for a very good reason and ensuring you and your family or employees are safe is our ultimate goal.  

Some people have developed asbestos-related lung disease, such as asbestosis, lung cancer or mesothelioma after inhaling asbestos fibres.  These diseases are generally associated with long-term exposure to asbestos in an occupational setting however, we are now seeing the home renovator also contracting these diseases from being exposed to the dangerous fibres whilst renovating there home.  These cases are generally with people that renovate and sell, renovate and sell, renovate and sell and they have been exposed on more than one house.  

There is no documented data to indicate the level of exposure that may cause these health effects therefore, exposure to asbestos fibres or dust should always be kept to a minimum.

What should I do if I find asbestos in my workplace? 

The first thing you should do is find out if you have a Hazardous Materials Register.  This is a document that will identify and record all areas of the workplace that contain hazardous materials including lead based paint, synthetic mineral fibres (SMF) and asbestos.  It will grade the level of risk.  

Your Management Team should then have a Risk Management Plan put together which will set out the date for removal or monitoring.  

In many cases, if asbestos has been identified as a low risk, the Company will not have it removed unless renovations are taking place.  

We have found that the largest area for concern is for workplaces that have a corrugated asbestos roof without an internal ceiling.  The dust particles being released from the roof will most likely contain traces of asbestos fibre.  Generally the building will have steel beams which will enable the dust to settle.  If a bird gets inside the roof or there is a gush of wind into the roof area, this alone can cause the dust to become airborne and find its way down to ground level and possibly into your lungs.

We can also spray seal the exposed asbestos sheeting with a specialized asbestos sealant.  This sealant is specially formulated to penetrate into the sheet to lock in the asbestos fibres.  This will minimize any dust being generated if the sheets get broken.  Once a sheet is cracked or broken it still needs to be removed immediately.  This sealer comes in clear liquid form and colours can be added if you desire.  Click Here if you would like more information about the sealing process.
